All players of whatever standard may enter this league in order to improve their play. This gives all members an opportunity of contacting players of a similar standard, both male and female. Trophies are awarded to the winners at the section AGM in November. Occasionally, 'American' tournaments and Mixed Handicapped leagues are organised.Fixed Fours / Casual PlayIt is possible to arrange fixed fours or singles in the daytime or at any time when social play, coaching or league matches are not taking place. VisitorsAll members may bring guests to play, subject to certain restrictions:
MatchesLeague tennis enables players to test themselves against a wider range of opposition and play on different surfaces whilst representing the club. Matches are generally played on weekday evenings in either Men's, Women's or Mixed doubles format. Teams of four are chosen from the squads at each level. While league tennis can be quite competitive, the social side is always encouraged, and team players are expected to contribute to the cost of entertaining the opposition after matches. Likewise you will be entertained when playing away from home. Match suppers are generally taken in the clubhouse. Match PracticePractice sessions begin in February or March and last through to the start of the competition season. Members wishing to play league tennis should contact the appropriate team captain.
JuniorsOur section policy is to give the utmost support to young people
wishing to play tennis. We provide coaching for all children over the
age of 6 years, and are able to supply short tennis rackets and
appropriately sized nets and balls. We try to make tennis fun and
active with just the right blend of competitiveness. FloodlightsTwo of the astro courts have floodlights which are operated from the meters located in the Bowls Pavilion porch. During the winter the courts will be lit for social tennis on Monday and Wednesdays. They can also be used at other times for matches or fixed fours/singles. No fees are charged as these are now covered by the membership fees. Balls
Dress and EtiquetteAlthough whites are no longer considered necessary for social play,
members are expected to be suitably and safely attired, including
proper footwear. For match play players should endeavour to wear some
proper white tennis clothing. Players are expected to show consideration for others on the courts and to observe simple rules such as not entering or passing the back of a court whilst play is in progress. Loose balls should not be left in dangerous positions on court. The shale courts should be swept after last use. |
